Five locations in Batanes will soon have access to free Internet as the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), through its Luzon Cluster 1, continues the installment of 20 Free Wi-Fi hotspots under the Free Wi-Fi for All program.

“The DICT is true to its commitment to provide fast, free, and secure Internet connectivity to public places nationwide—most especially to our geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas,” DICT Secretary Gregorio B. Honasan II said.

Beneficiaries of the program include the Batanes General Hospital, Batanes State College, Provincial Capitol of Batanes, Mahatao Town Hall, and DICT Batanes Provincial Office.

DICT Luzon Cluster 1 is optimistic that the Free Internet connectivity provided by the DICT will “open digital opportunities that will bolster social, educational, and economic growth of the promising province of Batanes.”

Still part of its efforts to provide Internet connectivity in remote and far-flung areas, the DICT has also recently launched Free Wi-Fi sites in various areas in Tawi-Tawi and Sulu in Mindanao.

As of 10 March 2021, a total of 8,170 Free Wi-Fi sites were established across the country. Moreover, approximately 5,000 Free Wi-Fi sites were deployed across the country since Secretary Honasan assumed office as DICT chief in July 2019.

“When I was appointed as DICT Secretary in 2019, my first order of business was to strengthen the national connectivity programs of the Department – the Free Wi-Fi for All Program included – following President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s directive for the DICT to connect the government to other governments, domestic and global; government to businesses; government to citizens; and everybody to each other in a faster, cheaper if not free, and in a more secure manner,” Secretary Honasan explained.

“What we have accomplished so far is a product of DICT’s dedication and commitment to meet the President’s expectations, and most importantly, to provide better Internet services to all Filipinos wherever they are in the country,” he added.

Section 5 of Republic Act 10929 or the Free Internet Access in Public Places Act mandates the DICT as the lead implementing agency that will oversee the effective and efficient implementation of the law.
