The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Mindanao Cluster 1 (MC1) deployed multiple Free Wi-Fi sites and ICT equipment in Sulu last April 6 to 8, 2021.
This is part of the Department’s initiative to reach, connect and empower geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) across the country.
“Your DICT stays true to its commitment to provide Internet connectivity and digital services to all Filipinos wherever they are in the country. Through the Free Wi-Fi for All and Tech4ED Programs, we aim to connect all Filipinos to the digital landscape and provide them with digital opportunities for growth and advancement in various areas,” DICT Secretary Gregorio B. Honasan II said.
Free Wi-Fi were installed in Mindanao State University, Sulu State College, Sulu Provincial Hospital, and Camp General Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital where two wounded soldiers from an encounter against Abu Sayyaf group on the same day of the program’s launching were able to connect to their families through the government-provisioned Internet connectivity.
“Malaki po ang maitutulong ng Free Wi-fi ng DICT dahil mahina ang Internet dito sa Sulu. Magagamit namin ito sa mga teleconferencing. Salamat sa DICT sa free internet, tumaas ang morale ng ating mga kasundalohan,” Maj. Sayid C. Cedicol, Doctor & Commanding Officer of Camp Bautista Station Hospital, said.
Meanwhile, computer packages and ICT equipment were donated and installed in Mindanao State University, Sulu State College, and Barangay Bus-Bus in Jolo through the Tech4ED Program.
DICT M1, led by Regional Director Maria Teresa Camba, was accompanied by the Western Mindanao Command, through the Philippine Coast Guard BRP Bagacay, in the implementation of the said programs in Sulu.
