The Department of Information and Communications Technology Visayas Cluster 2 (DICT VC2) targets to establish 424 Free Wi-Fi sites in Region VII (Central Visayas) for 2021 under the Department’s Free Wi-Fi for All Program.

“Your DICT continues to ramp up its connectivity efforts, especially the Free Wi-Fi for All Program, in line with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s directive to connect the government to other governments, government to businesses, government to citizens, and everybody to each,” DICT Secretary Gregorio B. Honasan II said.

“Free Wi-Fi provides instant access to the Internet and will help Filipinos adopt to the new normal,” he added.

DICT VC2 looks forward to deploying Free Wi-Fi sites in 106 locations across the region, with Four (4) Free Wi-Fi sites to be installed in one (1) location.

Target locations include government offices, public hospitals, public schools, state universities and colleges (SUCs), airports and seaports, terminals, among others.

As of March 10 this year, there are a total of 8,170 Free Wi-Fi sites deployed across the country. Approximately 5,000 of these Free Wi-Fi sites were installed since Secretary Honasan was appointed as DICT chief in 2019.

Meanwhile, the DICT aims to deploy more Free Wi-Fi sites in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas using very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology.

This is part of the Department’s efforts to reach and connect remote and far-flung areas in the country.

“The continuous implementation of the Free Wi-Fi program resulted to a 500% increase in the activation of the sites in the year 2020 alone. We want to direct this growth to places where there is minimal to no fiber and tower,” Secretary Honasan explained.
