08 March 2020 – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will participate in the National Women’s Month Celebration (NWMC) to be led by the Philippine Commission on Women this month, coinciding with the International Women’s Month Celebration. This month-long activity will include the conduct of symposiums and an online photo contest highlighting gender equality and women’s empowerment. The DICT NWMC will be launched on March 10 through a “Solidarity Walk for a Cause” for the benefit of the Taal Volcano eruption victims.
The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs. SDG 5 aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. While the international community attained substantial progress towards the achievement of SDG 5, women and girls continue to suffer discrimination and violence in every part of the world.
In a statement, DICT Assistant Secretary for Administration Ivin Ronald D.M. Alzona shared the importance of DICT’s participation in this year’s NWMC and the pursuit to achieve SDG 5: “As mandated by law, DICT is tasked to plan, develop and promote the national ICT development agenda and empower the disadvantaged segments of the population through the use of ICT. Therefore, it is incumbent for DICT to ensure that all national ICT initiatives, projects and programs are gender-responsive. DICT will strive to improve access to ICT services so that women andchildren shall be informed of the proper measures to avoid, prevent and fight cybercrime and cyber-trafficking. These are just a few of the initiatives that DICT will pursue in order to promote gender equality. In this year’s NWMC, everyone must work together in harmony to strengthen the implementation of the Magna Carta of Women and achieve the goals set forth under SDG 5 and 2017-2022 NWMC.”
