January 14, 2020 – The Digital Hub project of the Mindanao Cluster 1 of the Department of Information and Communications Technology in Zamboanga City has been shortlisted for voting of the 2020 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes under the e-Employment category.

The Digital Hub is a co-working space and a learning facility that caters to the public 24/7. It operates on three main objectives: (1) providing access to ICT resources and opportunities; (2) providing capacity-building activities on ICT skills; and (3) providing a work facility for people employed in digital jobs.

The Hub has served over 2,500 users and trained over 700 on digital skills since its establishment. Data also show that freelancers using the facility earn a combined average amount of 1.5 million pesos a month, thus contributing revenues to the local economy.

The WSIS Prizes aim to recognize entities that play an integral part in carrying out ICT-related initiatives to achieve target outcomes. For the e-Employment category, only 353 projects out of 806 projects were nominated from submissions worldwide, including this entry from the Philippines.

The WSIS Prizes is a global contest developed to create a platform to recognize projects and activities that leverage the power of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to advance sustainable development.

Voting for the 2020 WSIS Prizes is until January 24, 2020. Interested voters may visit the link for more information: https://www.itu.int/net4/wsis/stocktaking/Prizes/2020/Vote
