The Information and Communications Technology Office of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-ICTO), the Philippine government’s ICT arm has expressed support for the 3rd Startup Weekend in Cebu City, which is part of a global movement to spawn fast-growing ICT businesses.
The Startup weekend is a global movement to empower young entrepreneurs to nurture their innovative ideas into becoming sustainable businesses. The event gathers experts and practitioners from different fields of business to mentor the participants as they launch their concepts into business reality. It involves the participants in different stages of the business cycle including idea creation and business pitching, prototype development, mentorship and networking sessions until product or business presentation to possible funders.
Startup weekends seek to stimulate the development of entrepreneurial communities in dynamic economic centers like Cebu.
“We are very pleased to support this event, the promotion of homegrown ICT products and businesses will not only provide employment in the locality but also provide innovative and creative solutions thru their products and services.” said Undersecretary Louis Napoleon C. Casambre, Executive Director of DOST-ICTO.
Under Usec. Casambre’s leadership, the DOST-ICTO has been moving forward in its new thrust to uplift the entrepreneurial spirit in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry.
The Start up Weekend in Cebu will be on June 7-9 at the University of San Carlos- Downtown Campus, Cebu City. “ICTO believes that providing support in countryside entrepreneurial activities is an effective way in livening and expanding the local economy thru ICT and is consistent with DOST’s umbrella program for inclusive development called Smarter Philippines” Usec Casambre added.
DOST-ICTO will also be having a similar event for IT Startups on July 25 during the National Science and Technology week at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.
