The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has released the results of the first-ever National ICT Household Survey (NICTHS). The NICTHS was conducted in partnership with the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI), and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
The survey was conducted nationwide in late 2019 to generate national and regional estimates of ICT indicators. The NICTHS is part of a long-term strategy to address the gaps in ICT statistics by gathering data from households and individual-respondents. The 2013 Master Sample of the PSA with 43,838 sample households, was used for the survey.
The NICTHS has the most current data on ICT access and usage. Interesting highlights include the following:
- Less than half (47.1%) of the households have communal radios
- Around 82.7% of households have television at home
- About 17.7% of households have their own internet access at home
- Only 8.2% of households have their own fixed telephone line
- There are 24.0% of households have communal cellphones
- About 23.8% of households have communal computers
The release of the NICTHS results is timely as it gives an accurate picture of the state of ICT development in the country, as the nation and its citizens transition to the New Normal, and the needs for ICTs and digital technologies increase.
The results provide statistical information deemed essential to monitor relevant dimensions of ICT usage in households and by individuals, with data on household access to ICT, usage of internet and ICT products and services. Data on ICT activities, ICT skills, participation in e-commerce, use of e-government services, individual awareness on cybersecurity and privacy, are also covered in the NICTHS.
More results from the NICTHS may be accessed at the Department’s ICT Knowledge Portal at http://dict.gov.ph/ictstatistics/nicths2019/.
