Increasing developments in information and communication technology have allowed people from different countries and backgrounds to interact with one another in a more instantaneous fashion. In cyberspace, geographical barriers do not exist, allowing anybody from different parts of the globe to communicate with one another. With this increased interconnectedness of cultures, observance of differences between groups must then be emphasized.

Today marks the global observance of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. This serves to promote worldwide awareness about the importance of intercultural dialogue, diversity, and inclusion, aid battle discrimination and stereotypes, and help people understand from each other’s cultural tendencies which will aid in the cooperation of every individual.

History

The wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks have sparked the need to create the Universal Declaration on cultural Diversity, being the 249th resolution to be adopted at the 57th session on the UN General Conference held at Paris, France in November 2001. This created the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, which was first celebrated in 2003, further stressing the importance of intercultural dialogue as a way to prevent racial and cultural segregation and fundamentalism.

Recent efforts to stress cultural diversity in years following the declaration involve world leaders to build meaningful relationships with one another, encouraging their citizens to visit museums, art exhibits, and other gatherings where they can experience other cultures in order to recognize that every race is equal and has something to offer to the different schools of thought such as the arts, language, literature, science, and technology.

A Diverse and United Global Community

In the past, people often have conflicts with those whose cultures are different from what they are used to. Nowadays, where information is readily available with just a touch of a screen, people now have the unique opportunity to learn various cultures from across the world instantly. Using the Internet, people can gather information about one particular custom and harness this knowledge when dealing with people with a different heritage. Observances such as these help foster a world that is united through its citizens’ acknowledging and accepting each other’s differences.
