As part of the digitalPH initiative of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), the seedPH Program is seeking nominations for Startup Champions that will support, strengthen and sustain the efforts of the Department in spreading its startup advocacy to communities outside Metro Manila. There will be 25 Startup Champions selected to represent the country’s 17 regions and the DICT’s eight clusters. The project, is being carried out in partnership with IdeaSpace and National ICT Confederation of the Philippines.

“The Startup Champions will become DICT’s extension in providing assistance, guidance, and support to fledgling startup communities in the provinces. They would be the ones best positioned to reach the startups outside Manila in terms of proximity, and in terms of knowing how to work under the business and ICT conditions that these startups are facing. They will be an important link in fulfilling the Department’s mandate of bringing economic development opportunities to the countryside through ICT,” explains Undersecretary for Regional Operations and Countryside Development Monchito B. Ibrahim.

As of 2017, there were about 400 active startups throughout the country, fewer than some of our Asian neighbors, exposing the need to actively support startups to help develop the local ecosystem and enable them to sustain their activities. Growing the local startup ecosystem encourages more startups to form, leads to startup diversity and an open innovation system, and opens the opportunity to provide jobs to local talent, particularly those in the countryside.

The chosen Startup Champions will advise the regions on startup-related activities, help raise the awareness of the seedPH initiatives in their areas and organize local startup communities through meetups and events.

The corresponding nomination form may be accessed here. Answers to frequently asked questions may be found here. Further inquiries will also be entertained through startupchampions@dict.gov.ph.  The last day for submitting Startup Champion nominations is on October 14, 2018.
